BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS ON THE FEAST OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

Event hosted by: Filozoikos Nea Filadelphia / Friends of Animals NF
Date: Sunday, October 4, 2009
Time: 1pm-2pm with reception after
Price: Donations of food, clothing, cash

Location: St. Paul's Anglican Church
Address: 27 Filellinon Street, Athens, just off Syntagma Square

Every year on the first Sunday in October on the anniversary of the birth of St. Francis of Assisi (the patron saint of animals), people from all over world gather for blessings with their animal friends.

The Blessing of the Animals event present a unique opportunity to have fun and socialize with pets and other pet owners and animal lovers. Sponsoring churches welcome all animals, and all people no matter what their religious persuasion.

This years Blessing will be performed by Revd Canon Malcolm Bradshaw at the picturesque St. Paul's Church in the center of Athens.

From goldfish to horses; pets of all denominations are welcome at the Blessing of the Animals. You are welcome to bring any animal that has special meaning to you! Dogs, cats, snakes, fish, birds, hamsters, rabbits, etc. (All animals should be either leashed, in carrier, cages, bowls, etc. There may be many different species of pets there so be sure your pet is comfortable around strangers and other animals, including birds).

Ceremony specifics will released next week but traditionally with a blessing for all attendees, then everyone lines up with their pet to receive an individual blessing. Sometimes a few drops of holy water are sprinkled - which the feline guests don't always wholly appreciate!

Each pet will receive a Blessing Certificate to take home and owners will be treated with a selection of refreshments made available by volunteers and by donation.

Background on Organizers:

ST. PAUL'S ANGLICAN CHURCH feeds over 1500 refugee and homeless people every day and welcomes donations at the entrance of canned/dry food stuffs for their kitchens. Coats and winter clothing can also be dropped off. Please ensure all clothes are adequately bagged/boxed.

FILOZOIKOS SYLLOGOS NEA FILADELPHIA is a registered charity that operates a rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming shelter in North Athens currently treating 74 dogs/puppies/cats. Donations of cash is gratefully accepted to cover veterinary and medicine costs.
