Description: Dear Family,

Hello, my name is Laurin and I am 24 years old from London. I have been working in childcare since I was 18, part time at a crèche during my two years of A-levels and three years at university and full time since I graduated September 2008. I have also had a great experience as a nanny.

However, I have lived in London my whole life and would like to take a gap year to explore living elsewhere. The reason that I am applying for your nanny position is because I have always loved working with children and so using my childcare skills abroad would be the ideal option for me. Paris is my preferred location, since it is a favourite city of mine. I would also love to improve my French and would enjoy teaching English to children in my care.

I am an extremely responsible and proactive person who likes being involved in every aspect of taking care of children, specifically babies, whom I am confident at looking after. From playing with them, taking them to and from nursery, bathing and putting them to bed as well as encouraging their development. Over the last year I have had plenty of experience with babies and toddlers.

To illustrate, at Zoom nurseries where I have been for the past year I have looked after children from 3 months -5 years where the ratio for baby to nursery worker is 1 to 3 for under 2 year olds, 1 to 4 for 2-3 year olds and 1 to 8 for 4-5 year olds. At the nursery, I have had a lot of experience with the daily tasks and routines involved such as supervision of meals, nap-time and changing nappies. We also take safety at the nursery very seriously, taking into account potential hazards.

During my degree I worked part time at a nursery called Asquith Day nursery. This involved essentially the same tasks. However, the children only stayed for short periods of time, a maximum of three hours, and so I’d like to think I have become particularly good at forming bonds with children, making them feel safe very quickly. I also worked at Asquith nursery during my A levels which was a part time position for two years.

During 2004, a family from Asquith asked me to be their nanny. I took care of a 1 and 3 yr old as a sole charge nanny, until they moved back to their native Australia.

I am a kind, calm and patient person; personality traits of which I think are especially suited to looking after babies. I am also mature, friendly and helpful so I am extremely optimistic that I can fit into any family, almost like a big sister. Child care for me isn’t just a job, it’s something I genuinely enjoy and my long term career goal is to open up my own nursery own day, along with my sister, who works in the management side of child care.

I am currently single, have never had a gap year from education and feel this will be the perfect time to move away from home as I have no commitments in the UK. I do not smoke, enjoy eating healthily and have no medical requirements or major allergies to pets or anything else (apart from penicillin, but this shouldn’t affect me). I am used to long hours of work. I currently work 4-5 days at the nursery and I am there from 7.30am until 6.30pm. I am confident that I can be left in sole care of your child and am happy to apply myself to the family’s routine.

I am really looking forward to becoming a nanny in a new country and think it will be an exciting new experience for me. I went to university in Leicester and lived there for 3 years, away from friends and family and so I think I would settle into another country very well. Paris has always been a dream for me as I really enjoy French culture and the French lifestyle.

I hope you consider me suitable for the position and will certainly answer any other questions you may have. Feel free to ask anything!

I have a CRB, which I am going to get this updated as I have had it since starting at my current nursery in 2006. I don’t have a first aid certificate, but have attended first aid lessons in the past so know the basics. Excellent references can be sent on request. I have also included some photos with my letter. As for a start date, I can start whenever you need someone and will be in Paris visiting a friend for the weekend the 9th of October so could arrange to meet with you then if you so wish.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Laurin
