About the Bezuidenhout area
The heavy bombs of 3 March 1945 destroyed the biggest part of the old “Bezuidenhout” situated to the west of the “Laan van Nieuw Oost-Indië”. Not much is left of the lovely pre-war architecture. Parts of the “Bezuidenhoutseweg” and the “Emmapark” were not touched by the bombs. There are a total of 8.013 houses in the “Bezuidenhout”. It’s a mixture of privately owned houses and rental properties. The area consists of 3 parts; east, centre and west.
“Bezuidenhout Oost”(east) is situated between the “Bezuidenhoutseweg”, “Carel Reinierszkade”, “Schenkkade/Loolaan” and the “Laan van N.O. Indië”. This area has 9.058 residents.
“Bezuidenhout Midden” (centre/middle) is situated between the “Schenkkade”, “Laan van N.O. Indië”, the “Bezuidenhoutseweg” and the “Prinses Beatrixlaan”. This area has 2.999 residents.
The past decades there have been several radical changes in “Bezuidenhout Midden”. In the neighborhood surrounding the “Prinses Beatrixlaan” large offices were built. Since the beginning of the 90’s the local government has been working on a good connection between these offices and the “Utrechtsebaan”. Some other recent developments are the offices on the location “De Groene Schenk”, further development of the “Beatrixkwartier” and the new “RandstadRail”. Since 1996 the “Stichting 3 maart 1945 – 1995” are organizing memorial services of the bombardment. Since 1996 on the first Sunday in March there is a flower memorial at the statue of “Juliana van Stolberg” on the “Koningin Marislaan” and the 4 of May flower coronets are placed at the “Monument van de Menselijke Vergissing”.
