1. Manage Pain and Swelling Early - Use prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers as directed. Apply an ice pack on the cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) during the first 24–48 hours to reduce swelling. After 48 hours, switch to warm compresses to help with jaw stiffness.
2. Follow a Soft Food Diet - Eat soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, or smoothies. Avoid crunchy, spicy, or hot foods that may irritate the wound. Drink plenty of fluids, but do not use straws — the suction can dislodge the blood clot and lead to dry socket.
3. Rest and Avoid Physical Strain - Rest for the first couple of days. Keep your head elevated with pillows when lying down.Avoid exercise or heavy lifting for at least 3–5 days to prevent bleeding and discomfort.
4. Maintain Gentle Oral Hygiene - Do not brush the extraction site for the first 24 hours. After 24 hours, gently rinse your mouth with saltwater (½ tsp salt in a cup of warm water) a few times daily, especially after meals.Avoid mouthwashes with alcohol until fully healed.
5. Watch for Signs of Complications - Call your dentist or oral surgeon if you notice: Persistent or worsening pain after 3–4 days. Pus, foul odor, or a bad taste. Fever or difficulty opening your mouth. These may indicate infection or dry socket and require prompt care.
