Jordan – Contractor & Tax Overview
???? 1. Does Jordan have a 1099 equivalent?
No. Jordan does not have a “1099” form like in the U.S. Instead:
Income reporting and taxation are handled through local tax laws and invoices.
Freelancers and independent contractors are usually treated as self-employed individuals or businesses.
???? 2. If you're a contractor in Jordan (local):
A. Legal Status
You may need to register as a freelancer, sole proprietor, or individual business with Jordan’s Companies Control Department or Ministry of Industry and Trade.
You should also register with the Income and Sales Tax Department (ISTD) for tax compliance.
B. Taxes
Jordan imposes personal income tax on individuals:
5%–30% progressive rates for residents (based on annual income).
The tax year is the calendar year.
You must file an annual tax return (usually by the end of April the following year).
C. Invoices & Payments
You issue invoices to clients (local or international) and may be subject to sales tax (16%), depending on the type of service and your registration status.
???? 3. If you’re a U.S. citizen contracting in Jordan:
A. You may still need to file a U.S. tax return.
As a U.S. citizen, you're taxed on worldwide income, even if you're living abroad.
You’ll likely still need to file a 1099 if you're hiring a U.S.-based contractor, or report foreign income on your U.S. taxes.
You may qualify for Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) (Form 2555) or Foreign Tax Credit (FTC) (Form 1116).
???? 4. Working remotely with Jordan-based contractors (as a U.S. business)?
If you're a U.S.-based business paying a contractor in Jordan:
You do not file a 1099 for them unless they are U.S. persons.
You should request a W-8BEN form from the contractor to document their foreign status for IRS compliance.
Payments may be subject to U.S. withholding tax if there is no applicable tax treaty—but Jordan and the U.S. do not currently have a tax treaty.
