STD Treatment Options: What Are Your Choices?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are common, but many can be treated effectively if diagnosed early. The right treatment depends on the type of infection—whether it is bacterial, viral, or parasitic.

1. Bacterial STDs (Curable with Antibiotics) - Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Trichomoniasis (caused by parasites but treated with antibiotics). Antibiotics such as azithromycin, doxycycline, or ceftriaxone. One-time dose or short course, depending on the infection. Important to complete the full course even if symptoms disappear.
2. Viral STDs (Manageable, Not Curable) - HIV, Herpes (HSV), Hepatitis B, HPV. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) to control the virus and prevent progression. Herpes: Antiviral medications (acyclovir, valacyclovir) reduce outbreaks and transmission. Hepatitis B: Antiviral drugs and liver monitoring.
3. Parasitic STDs - Medicated creams or shampoos for lice and scabies. Oral antibiotics (metronidazole or tinidazole) for trichomoniasis.
4. Supportive & Preventive Care - Pain relief and symptom management (topical creams, antivirals, anti-inflammatories). Regular screening for early detection. Vaccinations (HPV, Hepatitis B). Partner treatment to avoid reinfection. Safe sex practices (condoms, reducing partners, mutual testing).

Bacterial and some parasitic STDs are curable. Viral STDs can’t be cured but can be managed effectively. Early testing and treatment are crucial to prevent complications and protect partners.
