How Long Does Ankle Fracture Surgery Take?

Ankle fracture surgery (also called open reduction and internal fixation, ORIF) usually takes about 1 to 2 hours in most cases.

However, the exact duration depends on:

Type of fracture – Simple fractures with clean breaks are faster (around 1 hour), while complex fractures involving multiple bones or dislocations may take 2 hours or more.
Number of bones involved – A fracture of just the fibula is quicker than one involving both the tibia and fibula.
Stability of the fracture – If plates, screws, or rods are needed, the procedure may take longer.
Surgeon’s technique and approach – Minimally invasive methods may reduce surgery time compared to open procedures.
A patient's condition – Swelling, soft tissue injury, or prior health concerns can add to the time.

After surgery, patients usually spend 1–2 hours in recovery as anesthesia wears off.
