1. HIV Test - Detects human immunodeficiency virus, which weakens the immune system. At least once in your lifetime; more often if you have multiple partners or other risk factors.
2. Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Test - These bacterial infections are common and often symptomless but can cause infertility if untreated. Annually for sexually active individuals under 25, or those with new/multiple partners.
3. Syphilis Test - A bacterial infection that can damage organs if untreated and can be passed from mother to baby. For people at high risk, during pregnancy, or if symptoms appear.
4. Hepatitis B and C Test - Viral infections that affect the liver; hepatitis B can be prevented with a vaccine, hepatitis C can be cured. If you have unprotected sex, history of injection drug use, or were born in regions with high prevalence.
5. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Test / Pap Smear - Detects strains of HPV that can cause cervical cancer or genital warts. For women starting at age 25–30, repeated every 3–5 years.
6. Herpes (HSV-1 & HSV-2) Test - Herpes simplex virus can cause painful sores, but many carriers are asymptomatic. If you have symptoms, a partner with herpes, or high-risk sexual activity.
Regular screenings are important even without symptoms since many STDs remain silent in the early stages.
