Before the Procedure
Consultation: Your dentist or oral surgeon will examine your mouth, take X-rays, and discuss whether you need local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia (depending on the complexity of your case).
Instructions: You may be advised not to eat or drink for several hours before surgery if sedation or general anesthesia will be used.
During the Procedure
1. Anesthesia – Local anesthesia: Numbs only the area around the tooth. Sedation anesthesia: You remain relaxed and drowsy but conscious. General anesthesia: You are fully asleep (used in complex cases).
2. Extraction Process – The dentist makes an incision in the gum (if needed). Bone blocking the tooth may be removed. The tooth may be extracted whole or sectioned into smaller pieces for easier removal. The area is cleaned, and stitches may be placed (sometimes dissolvable).
3. Duration – Simple extractions take about 20–40 minutes. More complex cases may take longer.
Overall, wisdom tooth extraction is safe and straightforward, and your dentist will give you tailored aftercare instructions for a smooth recovery.
