1. Infection - Risk of wound infection at the incision site, especially if there is significant swelling or if the skin was damaged during the fracture. Severe cases may require antibiotics or further surgery.
2. Nerve or Blood Vessel Injury - Nearby nerves or vessels can be damaged during surgery, leading to numbness, tingling, or circulation problems.
3. Blood Clots (Deep Vein Thrombosis) - Immobility after surgery increases the risk of clot formation in the legs, which can be dangerous if the clot travels to the lungs (pulmonary embolism).
4. Bone Healing Problems - Delayed healing, nonunion (bone doesn’t heal), or malunion (bone heals in the wrong position). More common in smokers, diabetics, or people with poor bone health.
5. Hardware Complications - Screws or plates may cause irritation, pain, or movement restriction. Sometimes, a second surgery is needed to remove the hardware.
6. Post-Traumatic Arthritis - Even after successful surgery, damage to the ankle joint can lead to arthritis later in life.
With proper surgical technique, rehabilitation, and following post-surgery precautions (weight-bearing limits, physiotherapy, etc.), these risks can be significantly reduced.
