1. Clean Your Retainers Daily - Brush gently using a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste or mild dish soap. Avoid using regular whitening toothpaste — it’s too harsh and can scratch the retainer surface, making it more prone to staining.
2. Avoid Staining Foods and Drinks - Remove your retainers before eating or drinking anything besides water. Drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, and cola, or foods with turmeric, curry, or tomato sauce can stain retainers easily.
3. Rinse After Every Use - Rinse your retainers with lukewarm water (not hot!) every time you take them out. This helps wash away saliva and bacteria before they dry on the retainer surface.
4. Soak in Cleaning Solution Weekly - Use a retainer cleaning tablet (like Retainer Brite or Invisalign Cleaning Crystals) once or twice a week. Let them soak for 15–20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid using mouthwash with alcohol — it can cloud or damage the retainer plastic.
5. Store Properly - Always store your retainers in a clean, dry case when not in use. Avoid wrapping them in tissues (they dry out and attract bacteria).
6. Keep Away from Heat - Don’t leave retainers in hot water, direct sunlight, or near a heat source — the plastic can warp or discolor.
If your retainers already have mild stains, soak them in a mix of equal parts white vinegar and lukewarm water for 15 minutes, then brush gently and rinse well. Avoid this more than once a week, as vinegar is acidic.
