The Genesis: A Vision Rooted in Tradition and Innovation
Sarvdev Ayurvedic Medical College and Maha Mrityunjay Hospital was born from a profound commitment to revive and elevate Ayurveda in a region rich with cultural heritage but underserved in specialized healthcare. Founded in 2023 and approved by the National Council for Indian Systems of Medicine (NCISM) and the Ministry of Ayush, the institution is affiliated with the prestigious Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University in Gorakhpur. Though some records trace its preparatory roots back to 2016, the formal launch marked a new chapter in Azamgarh's medical landscape, addressing the growing demand for qualified Ayurvedic practitioners amid rising chronic diseases like diabetes, stress-related disorders, and lifestyle imbalances.
The name "Sarvdev" evokes universality—serving all beings through divine healing—while "Maha Mrityunjay" honors Lord Shiva's conquering of death, symbolizing the hospital's mission to triumph over illness. Located at Ghazipur-Azamgarh Road, Itaura, Chandeshwar, Azamgarh, the campus spans a lush, eco-friendly expanse designed to foster tranquility and learning. From its inception, Sarvdev has aimed to blend ancient texts like Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita with contemporary teaching methods, ensuring graduates are versatile healers ready for global challenges.
The inauguration in September 2025 was a grand affair, graced by dignitaries including Prof. A.K. Sharma, vice chancellor of the affiliating university, and other honored guests. This event underscored the institution's rapid ascent, drawing enthusiasts from across Uttar Pradesh and highlighting its role in bridging rural healthcare gaps. Today, with an intake of 60 BAMS seats, Sarvdev is already making waves, proving that innovation in tradition can yield profound results.
Academic Excellence: Forging the Next Generation of Ayurvedic Physicians
At the heart of Sarvdev is its robust academic framework, centered on the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) program—a rigorous 5.5-year course including a mandatory one-year internship. This curriculum, aligned with NCISM guidelines, immerses students in the eight branches of Ayurveda: Kayachikitsa (internal medicine), Shalya Tantra (surgery), Shalakya Tantra (ENT and ophthalmology), Kaumarbhritya (pediatrics), Bhuta Vidya (psychiatry), Agada Tantra (toxicology), Rasayana (rejuvenation), and Vajikarana (reproductive health).
The program begins with foundational sciences like Rachana Sharir (anatomy) and Kriya Sharir (physiology), progressing to advanced subjects such as Dravyaguna Vijnana (pharmacology) and Rasa Shastra (pharmaceutical chemistry). Students dissect cadavers using Ayurvedic principles, study herbal formulations in state-of-the-art labs, and engage in clinical rotations at the attached hospital. What sets Sarvdev apart is its emphasis on practical, patient-centered learning—over 70% of the curriculum involves hands-on training, ensuring graduates emerge not just knowledgeable but compassionate clinicians.
Admission is merit-based, hinging on NEET UG scores followed by counseling through the Uttar Pradesh Ayush State Society. Eligibility requires 10+2 in the science stream with at least 50% aggregate in physics, chemistry, and biology, and candidates must be at least 17 years old by December 31 of the admission year.
Faculty at Sarvdev are the true architects of this excellence. Led by Principal and Medical Superintendent Prof. (Dr.) Nilesh Prabhakar Masurkar (BAMS, MD, joining December 2023), the team comprises over 25 dedicated educators. Highlights include Dr. Eknath Pruthvinath Jadhav (Associate Professor, Rachana Sharir), Dr. Yogita Jain (Associate Professor, Rog Nidan), and Dr. Samarth Prakash Rao Kotasthane (Associate Professor, Ayurved Samhita & Siddhant). Many hold MD/MS degrees from reputed universities like Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and are registered with bodies like the Maharashtra Council of Indian Medicine or Uttar Pradesh's Board of Ayurvedic and Unani Systems.
These mentors employ interactive pedagogies: seminars, workshops, and guest lectures from luminaries in Ayurveda. A recent webinar on "Chakrapani" by the Department of Ayurveda Samhita & Siddhanta in September 2025 delved into classical commentaries, sparking intellectual fervor among students. Sanskrit classes, led by experts like Mr. Abhishek Kumar Rajbhar (MA Sanskrit), ensure authentic interpretation of texts, preserving the language's sanctity.
State-of-the-Art Infrastructure: A Haven for Learning and Healing
Sarvdev's campus is a testament to thoughtful design, blending modern amenities with Ayurvedic harmony. Spanning verdant grounds, it features 14 specialized departments, each with dedicated labs, museums, and libraries stocked with texts like Ashtanga Hridaya and Bhaishajya Ratnavali. Classrooms are equipped with AV aids, projectors, and Wi-Fi, facilitating blended learning. The herbal garden, sprawling over 2,500 square meters, boasts 250+ plant species—from Ashwagandha to Tulsi—serving as a living classroom for Dravyaguna studies.
The library is a scholar's delight, housing thousands of volumes, journals, and e-resources, open round-the-clock for avid learners. Laboratories hum with activity: dissection halls for Sharir Rachana, pathology labs for Rog Nidan, and a quality-testing pharmacy supervised by experts like Dr. Sutapamati Rath (MD Bhaishajya Kalpana). An auditorium hosts seminars, while IT infrastructure supports research in Ayurvedic informatics.
Hostel life thrives in separate boys' and girls' accommodations, complete with mess facilities offering sattvic meals—think khichdi, herbal teas, and seasonal veggies to align with Ayurvedic doshas. Gymnasiums, indoor/outdoor sports arenas, and yoga pavilions promote holistic fitness. Eco-initiatives like solar power backups and rainwater harvesting underscore sustainability, echoing Ayurveda's reverence for Prakriti (nature).
