Key Symptoms of an Ankle Ligament Tear
1. Sudden Sharp Pain - Pain occurs immediately after twisting or rolling your ankle. The pain is usually located on the outer side (lateral ligament tear) or inner side (medial ligament tear).
2. Swelling Within Minutes to Hours - The ankle becomes visibly swollen. Swelling may continue to increase for the first 24–48 hours.
3. Bruising and Discoloration - Blue, purple, or dark marks may appear around the injury. Bruising can spread down into the foot due to gravity.
4. Difficulty Bearing Weight - You may struggle to stand or walk on the affected leg. Severe tears often make weight-bearing nearly impossible.
5. Instability or “Wobbly” Feeling - The ankle may feel like it’s “giving way.” This suggests ligament laxity or a more serious tear.
If symptoms worsen or persist beyond 3–5 days, a specialist should examine your ankle—especially in Singapore, where early intervention often prevents chronic ankle instability.
