Men's Health: What You Need To Know About STD Symptoms

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) — also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs) — are infections passed during sexual contact (vaginal, anal, or oral), but many people have no symptoms at all. That’s why regular screening is essential if you’re sexually active, even with no obvious signs.

Common STD Symptoms in Men

1. Urinary Symptoms - Pain or burning when urinating — common in chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and herpes. I need to urinate frequently.
2. Penile/Genital Discharge - Unusual discharge (clear, white, yellow, or green) from the penis is a classic sign of infections like gonorrhea or chlamydia.
3. Genital Irritation - Itching, redness, or irritation around the penis or groin can indicate herpes, trichomoniasis, or other infections.
4. Testicle Pain or Swelling - Painful or swollen testicles may occur with epididymitis linked to untreated chlamydia or gonorrhea.
5. Sores, Blisters, or Bumps - Painful or painless sores or blisters on the genitals or around the anus can indicate: Herpes (painful blisters), Syphilis (small, painless ulcers), HPV (genital warts).
6. Flu-like Symptoms - Fever, swollen lymph nodes (especially in the groin), body aches, or fatigue — particularly in early HIV infection or secondary syphilis.
7. Other Possible Signs - Rash on the body or genitals. Rectal pain, discharge, or bleeding (especially with receptive anal sex), Sores or unusual bumps in the mouth or throat after oral sex.

Some STIs — like chlamydia, HPV, HIV (in early chronic stage), and others — often show no symptoms at all. That makes testing critical.
