What Is PEP (Quick Recap)
PEP is a 28-day course of HIV medication. It must be started as soon as possible, and no later than 72 hours after potential HIV exposure. The earlier you start, the more effective it is.
Step 1: Recognise When You Need PEP - You should seek PEP immediately if, within the last 72 hours, you had: Unprotected vaginal or anal sex, Condom breakage during sex, Sexual assault, Needle sharing or accidental needle injury, Exposure to blood or bodily fluids through open wounds.
Step 2: Go to the Right Place (Don’t Wait) - In Singapore, you can access PEP through: Public Hospitals (24/7 – Best for Urgency) - Emergency Departments (A&E) at restructured hospitals. Ideal if it’s night-time, weekend, or close to the 72-hour limit.
Step 3: What Will Happen at the Clinic - Expect the following (usually completed in 1 visit):
1. Risk assessment - Doctor asks about timing, type of exposure, and protection used
2. Baseline tests - HIV test (PEP is given even if results are pending). Possible tests for Hep B, Hep C, and other STIs
3. Immediate start of PEP - You’ll usually receive the first dose on the spot.
4. Prescription for 28 days - Sometimes given in stages with follow-up visits.
PEP is an emergency treatment, 72 hours is a hard deadline, Singapore has safe, confidential, and effective access. Acting fast can prevent lifelong HIV infection.
