1. Follow Weight-Bearing Rules (No Shortcuts!) - One of the biggest causes of complications is walking too early. Stick strictly to your surgeon’s advice: non-weight bearing, partial, or full. Use crutches, a walker, or a boot exactly as instructed. Putting weight on the ankle too soon can cause implant failure or bone displacement.
2. Keep Swelling Under Control - Swelling isn’t just uncomfortable—it can slow healing. Elevate your leg above heart level several times a day. Apply ice (if approved) for 15–20 minutes at a time. Avoid letting the leg hang down for long periods.
3. Watch for Infection Signs (Very Important) - Surgical site infections can seriously delay recovery. Call your doctor if you notice: Increasing redness, warmth, or swelling, Pus or foul-smelling discharge, Fever or chills, Worsening pain after initial improvement. Keep dressings clean and dry. Don’t remove sutures or scabs yourself.
4. Take Medications Exactly as Prescribed - Complete your antibiotics course if given, Take pain meds as directed (don’t overuse), If prescribed blood thinners, take them seriously—they help prevent clots.
5. Start Physiotherapy at the Right Time - Skipping or delaying rehab is a common mistake. Early guided movement prevents stiffness and chronic pain, Strengthening helps restore balance and ankle stability, Don’t self-exercise without clearance—it can backfire.
Most post-surgery ankle problems come from doing too much too soon or ignoring warning signs. Patience, protection, and proper rehab are your best allies.
