Expander Operator
Note :
Candidates should have experience in LSAW Pipe and DI Pipes companies.
Core Responsibilities
• Mechanical Expansion: Operate the high-pressure hydraulic mechanical expander to ensure the pipe meets final Outside Diameter (OD), Ovality, and Straightness specifications.
• Expansion Ratio Control: Calculate and apply the correct expansion percentage (typically 0.8% to 1.5%) to ensure the yield strength of high-grade steel (X65, X70, X80) remains within standardise limits.
• Tooling Setup: Select and install the correct expansion segments (Tools) and segment holders based on the pipe's internal diameter and wall thickness.
• Step-by-Step Monitoring: Manage the "Step Length" and "Overlap" during the expansion cycle to avoid visible ridges or uneven diameter across the pipe length.
• Pressure Management: Monitor hydraulic pressures via HMI to ensure consistency and to detect potential machine failures or "pipe bursts" early.
• Quality Inspection: Verify the final dimensions using Pi-tapes and templates immediately after the expansion process.
Technical Skill Set
• Machine Operation: Proficiency in operating HMI/PLC systems from manufacturers like Haeunsler, SMS Group, or Fontijne Grotnes.
• Hydraulics Expertise: Understanding of high-pressure hydraulic cylinders, proportional valves, and lubrication systems.
• Measurement Tools: Expert use of Pi-tapes, internal micrometres, and "Go/No-Go" gauges.
• Metallurgy Awareness: Basic understanding of "Work Hardening" and how cold expansion affects the steel's toughness and yield-to-tensile ratio.
Key Qualifications
• Education: ITI (Fitter/Machinist) or a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
• Experience: 3–10 years of hands-on experience as a Pipe Expander Operator in an LSAW or UOE mill.
Preferred Attributes (Aramco & Global Standards)
• Safety Excellence: Mastery of Lock-Out Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures
• Zero-Defect Mindset: Ability to identify "Expander Marks" or surface scuffing that could lead to rejection
