1. Control Bleeding with Gauze - Your dentist will usually place a gauze pad over the extraction site. Bite down gently on the gauze for about 30–45 minutes to help form a blood clot. If bleeding continues, replace it with fresh gauze and maintain gentle pressure. Avoid excessive spitting or rinsing during the first 24 hours as it may dislodge the clot.
2. Manage Swelling and Pain - Mild swelling and discomfort are common after a Tooth Extraction. Applying a cold compress or ice pack to the outside of your cheek for 10–15 minutes at a time can help reduce swelling. Your dentist may also recommend over-the-counter pain relievers such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol to manage pain.
3. Avoid Smoking and Straws - Smoking or using a straw can create suction in the mouth, which may dislodge the protective blood clot and lead to a painful condition known as Dry Socket. It is best to avoid these activities for at least 48–72 hours after the procedure.
4. Eat Soft and Nutritious Foods - Stick to soft foods such as Yogurt, Mashed Potatoes, or Soup during the first few days. Avoid hard, spicy, or crunchy foods that could irritate the extraction site. Gradually return to your normal diet once the area begins to heal.
5. Maintain Gentle Oral Hygiene - Good oral hygiene is still important after a Tooth Extraction. Brush your teeth carefully while avoiding the extraction area for the first day. After 24 hours, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water to keep the area clean and support healing.
If you experience severe pain, persistent bleeding, fever, or swelling that worsens after a few days, contact your dentist immediately.
