1. Planning Lifting Operations
Develop lifting plans and method statements for routine and complex lifts
Select appropriate cranes, lifting gear, and accessories
Assess load weight, center of gravity, and lifting points
2. Risk Assessment & Safety
Conduct risk assessments and hazard identification
Ensure compliance with safety regulations (LOLER, local standards)
Implement control measures to prevent accidents
3. Supervision & Coordination
Coordinate with:
Crane operators
riggers
signalers / banksmen
Ensure everyone understands the lifting plan before execution
4. Equipment Verification
Ensure all lifting equipment is:
Certified and inspected
Suitable for the task
Check crane capacity charts and ground conditions
5. Documentation
Prepare and approve:
Lift plans
Permits to work
Inspection records
Maintain lifting operation logs
6. Monitoring Operations
Oversee lifting activities on-site
Stop work if unsafe conditions arise
Ensure proper communication signals are used
Required Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of:
Crane operations
Rigging techniques
Load calculations
Understanding of international standards ( BS 7121, LOLER)
Leadership and decision-making skills
Good communication and teamwork
Qualifications & Certifications
Relevant technical background (engineering or similar preferred)
Certification such as:
LEEA (Lifting Equipment Engineers Association)
CPCS Appointed Person (in some regions)
Experience in lifting operations (usually 3–5+ years)
