Role Overview The HVAC Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) systems. This role ensures that residential, commercial, or industrial indoor environments remain comfortable, safe, and energy-efficient. The technician must diagnose electrical and mechanical faults, perform routine preventative maintenance, and provide exceptional customer service.
Core Responsibilities
1. Installation and Commissioning
Install new heating, cooling, and ventilation systems (e.g., furnaces, split systems, heat pumps, boilers, and rooftop units) according to manufacturer specifications and local building codes.
Install and connect ductwork, refrigerant lines, and water piping.
Layout and install electrical wiring, controls, and thermostats.
Test newly installed systems for proper functionality, airflow, and refrigerant levels before final handover.
2. Maintenance and Inspection
Perform routine preventative maintenance (PM) such as cleaning coils, replacing filters, checking belt tension, and lubricating bearings.
Conduct seasonal system "tune-ups" to optimize energy efficiency and prolong equipment lifespan.
Inspect systems for potential risks, leaks, or wear and tear that could lead to future breakdowns.
Verify that systems comply with safety standards and local environmental regulations.
3. Diagnosis and Repair
Troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, pressure gauges, and manometers).
Repair or replace defective components, including compressors, motors, fans, expansion valves, and circuit boards.
Identify and fix refrigerant leaks while adhering to strict environmental guidelines for recovery and charging.
Respond to emergency service calls to restore climate control in critical environments.
4. Documentation and Customer Service
Maintain accurate logs of all work performed, including time spent, parts used, and system performance metrics.
Explain technical issues to customers in simple terms and provide recommendations for repairs or upgrades.
Estimate costs for labor and materials associated with specific repair or installation projects.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Technical Expertise
System Knowledge: Deep understanding of the refrigeration cycle, thermodynamics, and airflow dynamics.
Electrical Proficiency: Ability to read schematics, wire control circuits, and troubleshoot low and high-voltage components safely.
Tool Competency: Mastery of hand and power tools, vacuum pumps, recovery machines, and brazing/soldering equipment.
Blueprints: Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical diagrams.
Certifications and Education
Education: High school diploma or GED required; completion of an HVAC trade school program or apprenticeship is strongly preferred.
EPA Certification: EPA Section 608 Certification is mandatory (Universal preferred) for handling refrigerants.
Licensing: Must possess a valid state/regional HVAC technician license (where applicable).
Driving: A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is essential for traveling to job sites.
Soft Skills
Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to diagnose issues that are not immediately obvious.
Time Management: Ability to manage multiple service calls per day and prioritize tasks based on urgency.
Communication: Professional and polite demeanor when interacting with clients and team members.
