Lichen planus is a condition that can affect the skin, mouth, nails, and genitals, causing itchy, flat-topped bumps or lesions. While there''s no cure, various treatments can help manage symptoms and promote healing. Treatment Options: Topical corticosteroids: Creams and ointments containing corticosteroids are often the first line of treatment for skin and oral lichen planus to reduce inflammation and itching. Topical calcineurin inhibitors: Tacrolimus and pimecrolimus are examples of topical calcineurin inhibitors that can be used as second-line treatments for oral and genital lichen planus. Oral corticosteroids: In severe cases, oral steroids like prednisone may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. Antihistamines: These can help relieve itching associated with lichen planus. Light therapy (phototherapy): UVB light therapy can be effective for skin lichen planus. Retinoids: Oral or topical retinoids may be prescribed for severe cases, but they are not recommended for pregnant women. Other medications: In some cases, other medications like cyclosporine, azathioprine, methotrexate, mycophenolate, sulfasalazine, or thalidomide may be considered should be used after consultation with dermatologist.
