Why Cervical Cancer Screening Matters
Cervical cancer is often called a “silent killer” because it develops slowly and shows no symptoms early on. By the time symptoms appear, the disease may already be advanced.
Screening helps detect:
Precancerous cell changes
Early-stage cancer (when treatment is most effective)
HPV (Human Papillomavirus), the main cause of cervical cancer
Types of Cervical Cancer Screening
In Singapore, there are two main screening methods:
1. Pap Smear (Pap Test) - Detects abnormal cervical cells before they turn cancerous, Recommended for younger women, Done by collecting cells from the cervix for lab analysis.
2. HPV Test - Detects high-risk HPV strains that cause cervical cancer, More advanced and now widely preferred for women aged 30+.
Screening Guidelines in Singapore The national recommendations are clear and effective:
Age 25–29: Pap smear every 3 years
Age 30–69: HPV test every 5 years
