Dr. Christopher S. Ahmad, MD offers comprehensive shoulder instability evaluation and treatment at his New York City practice, serving patients across Manhattan, the Bronx, New Jersey, and the greater Tri-State Area.
ABOUT THE CONDITION
The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint. When the ball (humerus) slips partially or completely out of the socket (glenoid), it causes a subluxation or dislocation. This is often accompanied by tearing of the labrum — the cartilage that deepens the socket and stabilises the joint. Repeated dislocations increase the risk of bone loss on both the ball and socket, making early evaluation and treatment essential.
TREATMENT APPROACH
Dr. Ahmad's treatment philosophy starts with the least invasive option that can achieve the patient's goals. For first-time dislocations in younger athletes, immobilisation and rehabilitation may be appropriate. For athletes with recurrent instability, or those with significant labral or bone damage, arthroscopic surgery or the Latarjet procedure offers highly effective, long-term solutions.
