Typical Recovery Timeline
Week 1–3: Immobilisation - After the shoulder is put back into place, your doctor will usually recommend wearing a sling for one to three weeks to allow the injured tissues to heal and reduce pain.
Week 3–6: Early Rehabilitation - Gentle range-of-motion exercises and physiotherapy begin to restore mobility while preventing stiffness. Most patients can return to light daily activities during this period.
Week 6–12: Strengthening Phase - Exercises focus on strengthening the rotator cuff and shoulder stabilising muscles. Many patients regain good shoulder function within 6–12 weeks after an uncomplicated dislocation.
Month 3–6: Return to Sports and Heavy Activities - Patients involved in sports, heavy lifting, or physically demanding jobs often require 3–6 months before safely returning to full activity.
Surgery may be recommended for recurrent dislocations, significant ligament tears, or associated fractures.
