July Ledger Reshapes Power Generation Capacity Comparison

India’s July Power generation capacity data shows renewables above coal but below total thermal capacity. Renewable capacity was 239,660.98 MW on 30 July 2026, against coal capacity of 224,157.51 MW.
The 15,503.47 MW renewable lead was supported by 164,594.76 MW of solar and 58,136.89 MW of wind. These are installed-capacity figures, not measures of daily generation.
Coal, lignite, gas and diesel together totalled 251,489.13 MW. The combined thermal fleet remained 11,828.15 MW larger than renewables. Renewable energy target claims must specify coal alone or total thermal capacity. EnergylineIndia.com provides the factual assessment. The Power generation capacity crossover marks a structural change, but it does not prove that dispatchable thermal support is no longer required. Actual output depends on availability, utilisation and system conditions. The Power generation capacity ledger should not be treated as a generation report. Later Power generation capacity updates will show whether renewables overtake the complete thermal fleet.
