Specialist Geotechnical plays a critical role in supporting geotechnical engineering activities within a mining company. This position involves conducting field investigations, collecting geotechnical data, performing laboratory testing, and providing technical support for geotechnical analysis and design projects.
Key Accountabilities
Conduct field investigations and surveys to collect geotechnical data, including geological mapping, soil sampling, rock core logging, and groundwater monitoring, to assess ground conditions and identify potential hazards and risks.
Perform in-situ and laboratory tests on soil and rock samples, such as triaxial tests, permeability tests, and consolidation tests, using specialized equipment and techniques to determine geotechnical properties and behavior.
Assist in the analysis and interpretation of geotechnical data, including slope stability analysis, rock mass characterization, and groundwater modeling, and contribute to geotechnical design recommendations and risk assessments.
Provide technical support for geotechnical engineering projects, including slope stability assessments, foundation design, mine waste management, and ground control measures, and assist in the development of engineering solutions and mitigation measures.
Maintain and calibrate geotechnical equipment and instrumentation, including inclinometers, piezometers, and monitoring systems, and ensure accurate and reliable data collection for ongoing monitoring and analysis.
Prepare geotechnical reports, technical documents, and presentations, including figures, charts, and diagrams, to communicate geotechnical findings, analysis results, and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including geotechnical engineers, mining engineers, and environmental specialists, to integrate geotechnical considerations into mine planning, design, and operations, and provide support as needed.
Adhere to health, safety, and environmental regulations and company policies, procedures, and guidelines in all geotechnical activities, and promote a culture of safety and environmental stewardship within the team and the organization.
Provide training and mentorship to junior technicians, interns, and field assistants on geotechnical techniques, equipment operation, and safety procedures to develop their skills and enhance team effectiveness.
Stay updated on industry best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements in geotechnical engineering, and contribute to the continuous improvement of geotechnical processes, procedures, and standards.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor degree or technical certification in geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, or related field; bachelor's degree in geotechnical engineering or equivalent preferred.
Minimum Experience:
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in geotechnical fieldwork, laboratory testing, and data analysis, preferably within the mining or construction industry.
Experience in conducting geotechnical field investigations, including site reconnaissance, soil sampling, rock core logging, and instrumentation installation, and proficiency in using geotechnical equipment and tools.
Skills - Proficiency in geotechnical software applications, such as slope stability analysis software, finite element analysis software, and groundwater modeling tools, and the ability to analyze and interpret geotechnical data and results.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment, collaborate with colleagues, and communicate technical information clearly and concisely.
Attention to detail, accuracy, and thoroughness in data collection, testing procedures, and documentation tasks, with a commitment to maintaining data integrity and quality throughout the geotechnical process.
