How Gopal Goyal Kanda Moved From Entrepreneurship To The Haryana Assembly And Built A Dist

From business ventures and aviation to electoral politics, Gopal Goyal Kanda built a political identity in Sirsa outside the traditional party structure.

There is a particular kind of political journey that begins outside politics itself. It is shaped not by a conventional rise through party organisation, but by entrepreneurship, local relationships and a growing connection with the community before eventually entering the electoral arena.

Gopal Goyal Kanda followed such a path in Sirsa. From his early business activities and ventures into real estate and aviation to winning an Assembly election as an Independent candidate, his transition into public life created a political identity distinct from the established party structures of Haryana.

Kanda's political ambitions developed alongside his business career, and his early political associations included links with the Bansi Lal family and later the Chautalas. His relationship with the INLD eventually weakened, and after he was not given a party ticket, he chose to contest the 2009 Assembly election from Sirsa as an Independent.

The 2009 election became a decisive turning point. Kanda won the Sirsa seat, and when the Congress fell short of a majority, he became one of the Independents whose support mattered in government formation. He subsequently joined Bhupinder Singh Hooda's government as a minister, holding the Home portfolio among other responsibilities.

His first stint in the Assembly established an unusual political profile: a businessman who had entered electoral politics independently and then become part of the state government.

Rather than returning to an established political party, Kanda helped establish the Haryana Lokhit Party with his brother Govind Kanda in 2014. The move gave him a separate political platform through which he continued to build his presence in Sirsa and contest elections outside the major party structures.

That strategy produced another electoral victory in 2019, when Kanda won the Sirsa Assembly constituency as the Haryana Lokhit Party candidate. The Haryana Vidhan Sabha records list 2009 and 2019 as his two election victories, marking the continuation of a political career rooted in the same constituency where his public journey had begun.

Kanda's political identity in Sirsa has therefore emerged from a combination of entrepreneurship, local networks, electoral independence and community activity. His journey from business into the Assembly illustrates a route into Haryana politics that developed largely outside the conventional progression from party worker to legislator.
