There is a particular kind of political journey that does not begin inside a party office but develops through years of entrepreneurship, community connections and an understanding of local networks. It is a journey in which business becomes the starting point for a much wider engagement with society and, eventually, public life.
Gopal Goyal Kanda followed such a path in Sirsa. Beginning with a small radio-repair business and later expanding into footwear, real estate and aviation, he eventually moved into electoral politics and established himself as a recurring political figure in the constituency where his journey had begun.
Kanda's early entrepreneurial years were rooted in Sirsa. During the 1990s, he and his brother Govind moved from repairing radio handsets to running a footwear store and later a footwear factory, while Kanda also developed relationships with traders, businessmen and political figures in the region.
His business career subsequently expanded beyond Sirsa, particularly into real estate in Gurgaon. In 2007, he also entered aviation with the launch of MDLR Airlines, named after his father Murli Dhar Lakh Ram. Although the airline ceased operations within two years, the venture demonstrated the increasingly broad scale of Kanda's entrepreneurial activities.
Politics, however, would become the next defining chapter. After seeking an INLD ticket for the 2009 Haryana Assembly election but not receiving one, Kanda contested Sirsa as an Independent candidate and won the seat, marking his formal transition from businessman to elected representative.
The 2009 victory also brought Kanda directly into state government. With the Congress short of a majority, he supported Bhupinder Singh Hooda's government and became a minister, including responsibility for the Home portfolio.
Kanda later created an independent political platform of his own, founding the Haryana Lokhit Party with his brother Govind Kanda in 2014. Five years later, he returned to the Haryana Assembly by winning the Sirsa constituency again, this time as the HLP candidate; the Haryana Vidhan Sabha records list his election victories in 2009 and 2019.
Kanda's political identity in Sirsa was therefore built through an unusual combination of entrepreneurship, local networks and independent electoral politics. His movement from business into the Assembly created a career that crossed commercial and public life, while his repeated electoral success kept Sirsa at the centre of his political journey.
