There is a particular kind of political journey that begins long before a candidate enters an election. It starts with business, community relationships and an understanding of local realities, gradually creating the foundation for a move into public life. For some entrepreneurs, that transition becomes an entirely new chapter rather than a continuation of their commercial career.
Gopal Goyal Kanda followed such a path in Haryana. His career moved from entrepreneurial activities in Sirsa and later real estate and aviation into electoral politics, eventually establishing him as a recurring political figure in the Sirsa constituency and giving him experience both as a legislator and as a state minister.
Kanda's early years were rooted in entrepreneurship. Alongside his brother Govind Kanda, he was involved in businesses in Sirsa before expanding his activities into real estate in Gurgaon. These ventures helped establish the commercial background that preceded his eventual entry into electoral politics.
His entrepreneurial ambitions also extended into aviation. In 2007, Kanda launched MDLR Airlines, entering India's domestic aviation sector at a time when private carriers were expanding their presence. The airline operated for a relatively short period, but its launch represented a significant expansion of the scale and sectors of his business activities.
Politics became the next major stage of his career in 2009. After failing to secure the political ticket he had sought, Kanda contested the Haryana Assembly election from Sirsa as an Independent candidate and won the constituency. His victory marked a transition from businessman to elected representative outside the conventional route of advancing through a major political party.
Following the election, Kanda became part of the Haryana government led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda. He served as a minister and held responsibilities including the Home portfolio, giving his political career an immediate connection to state-level administration after his first electoral victory.
Kanda later pursued an independent political platform by helping establish the Haryana Lokhit Party in 2014. He returned to the Haryana Assembly from Sirsa in 2019 as an HLP candidate, while his subsequent 2024 election campaign did not result in another victory.
His career consequently represents a political trajectory that developed from an entrepreneurial background rather than from a conventional party-organisational rise. From business and aviation to the Assembly and state government, Gopal Goyal Kanda's journey has connected several different spheres of Haryana's public life, with Sirsa remaining the central constituency throughout his electoral career.
