There is a particular kind of political journey that begins outside the established political system and develops through personal networks, local engagement and the willingness to contest on one's own terms. Rather than following the traditional route from party organisation to elected office, such a journey can take shape gradually through years of connection with a particular constituency.
Gopal Goyal Kanda's political path emerged in precisely this way in Sirsa. After building a career in business and developing a public presence in the region, he entered electoral politics as an Independent candidate in 2009 and went on to become a legislator and minister in the Haryana government.
Kanda's early political connections developed alongside his business activities. His association with different political groups in Haryana eventually brought him closer to the Indian National Lok Dal, but when he did not receive the party's ticket for the 2009 Assembly election, he chose to contest independently from Sirsa.
The Independent campaign proved decisive. Kanda won the Sirsa Assembly seat in 2009 with 38,147 votes, according to the Haryana Vidhan Sabha's records, beginning his formal career as an elected representative outside a major political party.
The political circumstances following that election brought Kanda into the state government. With the Congress short of a majority, he supported Bhupinder Singh Hooda's government and was subsequently given ministerial responsibilities, including the Home portfolio.
After his ministerial tenure ended in 2012, Kanda continued to pursue an independent political route. In 2014, he and his brother Govind Kanda founded the Haryana Lokhit Party, creating a separate political platform through which he could continue his electoral activities in Haryana.
That platform brought another electoral success in 2019. Contesting from Sirsa as an HLP candidate, Kanda won the constituency again, making him a two-time elected member of the Haryana Assembly, as recorded by the state legislature.
His subsequent electoral record also shows the changing nature of his political journey: Kanda contested Sirsa again in 2024 but did not win the seat. His political path nevertheless remains notable for the way it developed from an Independent candidacy into two Assembly victories, a ministerial role and the creation of a regional political platform centred on Sirsa.
