Job Description: CNC Operator

Job Description: CNC Operator

Position Title: CNC Operator

Department: Production Department

Reports To: Production Supervisor / Machine Shop Lead

Job Purpose
The CNC Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery (such as 3/4/5-axis CNC routers, milling centers, and double-head cutting centers) to machine aluminum profiles and extrusions according to precise technical specifications. This role requires precision, technical proficiency with G-code/M-code controls, tool selection knowledge, and strict adherence to safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
1. Machine Operation & Setup

Job Preparation: Read technical drawings, cutting lists, and work orders to determine machine sequence, tooling requirements, and raw profile specifications.

Setup & Calibration: Load CNC programs, set work coordinate systems (zero points), install proper tooling (cutters, drills, end mills), and calibrate machine parameters.

Material Loading: Secure aluminum profiles into pneumatic clamps or vacuum fixtures, ensuring correct alignment and positioning prior to machining.

Execution & Monitoring: Run CNC machining cycles for cutting, routing, drilling, notch milling, and lock/hardware pocket preparations while monitoring for tool wear or machining anomalies.

2. Quality Control & Maintenance

Perform first-off and random batch inspections using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, protractors) to verify tolerances.

Inspect machined profiles for burrs, chatter marks, correct hole locations, and surface finish standards.

Perform routine daily maintenance (TPM), including checking coolant/lubricant levels, cleaning machine bed/chips, and inspecting cutting tools for wear or damage.

3. Safety & Workshop Environment

Maintain a safe, organized, and clean workstation free from metal chips, oil spills, and trip hazards.

Strictly follow lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedures and workshop safety guidelines.

Consistently wear mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety glasses with side shields, hearing protection, cut-resistant gloves, and safety shoes.

Skills & Qualifications
Technical Competencies

Blueprint & Code Reading: Ability to read 2D technical drawings, CAD layouts, and basic G-code / M-code commands.

Machine Control: Hands-on experience operating CNC control units (e.g., Siemens, Fanuc, Heidenhain, or proprietary window/door software interfaces like FOMCAM, Emmegi, or Elumatec).

Precision Measurement: Proficient with vernier calipers, micrometers, digital gauges, and geometric angle measurement.

Tooling & Feeds/Speeds Knowledge: Understanding of cutting tool geometries, coolant application, spindle speed adjustments, and optimal feed rates for aluminum extrusions.

Soft Skills & Physical Requirements

High level of accuracy, meticulous attention to detail, and quality consciousness.

Physical capability to lift, maneuver, and load long aluminum profiles into machine beds.

Good communication skills to report program errors, tooling issues, or material defects to supervisors and programmers.

Experience Requirements

Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of proven experience operating CNC machinery within an aluminum fabrication, metalworking, or manufacturing environment.

Education: High school diploma with vocational certification, ITI/technical diploma in CNC machining, Mechanical Technology, or equivalent experience.
