Chest Pain: Gas Or Heart Problem? Know The Warning Signs

Chest pain can sometimes be caused by gas, indigestion, or acid reflux. However, chest discomfort can also be related to a heart problem, and the symptoms may sometimes feel similar.

Gas or Acidity May Cause
Burning sensation in the chest
Bloating or belching
Acid taste in the mouth
Discomfort after meals
Symptoms that may worsen when lying down
Possible Warning Signs of a Heart Problem

Heart-related chest discomfort may feel like pressure, squeezing, heaviness, or tightness. It may spread to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, or jaw.

Other warning signs can include:

Shortness of breath
Cold sweating
Nausea
Dizziness or faintness
Unusual weakness
Persistent or recurring chest discomfort
Don't Assume Chest Pain Is Gas

It is not always possible to distinguish gas-related discomfort from heart-related chest pain based only on symptoms. New, severe, persistent, or unexplained chest pain should be medically evaluated.

If chest pain occurs with difficulty breathing, sweating, fainting, severe weakness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw, seek emergency medical care immediately.
