Advanced Stroke Care & Management – Dr. Mouna HN

A stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures. Because brain cells can be damaged quickly, recognizing the warning signs and getting emergency medical attention without delay is very important. 

Recognizing the Warning Signs of Stroke

Remember B.E. F.A.S.T.:

B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance or coordination
E – Eyes: Sudden changes in vision
F – Face: Drooping or numbness on one side of the face
A – Arm: Sudden weakness or numbness, especially on one side
S – Speech: Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
T – Time: Seek emergency medical help immediately

Even if the symptoms improve or disappear, they should not be ignored.

Stroke Diagnosis and Treatment

The type of stroke needs to be identified because treatment differs between an ischemic stroke, caused by a blocked blood vessel, and a hemorrhagic stroke, caused by bleeding in the brain. Medical teams may use brain imaging and other assessments to determine the cause and guide treatment.

For eligible patients with an ischemic stroke, treatments may include clot-dissolving medicines and, in selected cases, mechanical thrombectomy to remove a clot. Treatment options and timing depend on the individual patient and clinical assessment.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Stroke recovery can involve physical, communication, cognitive, and emotional challenges. Rehabilitation plans are tailored to the individual's condition, abilities, and recovery goals. Improvement can continue for months or even years, making ongoing follow-up and rehabilitation important.

Reducing the Risk of Another Stroke

Managing important risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, smoking, physical inactivity, and unhealthy eating habits can help reduce stroke risk. Medicines should be taken as prescribed, and treatment changes should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

When to Seek Emergency Help

If you or someone around you develops sudden weakness, facial drooping, speech difficulty, vision changes, balance problems, or another possible stroke symptom, seek emergency medical care immediately. Do not wait for the symptoms to improve.
