Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) is commonly used in heavy fabrication for welding thick materials and long joints. It can produce consistent welds when the welding conditions are properly controlled. But to get good results, the welding head needs to stay in the correct position and move steadily along the joint. This is where a Welding Column and Boom system becomes useful.
What Is a Welding Column and Boom?
A welding column and boom is a mechanized system that holds and positions the welding head. The column allows vertical movement, while the boom moves in and out to bring the welding head to the required location.
It is often used for welding large components such as pressure vessels, storage tanks, boilers, and cylindrical structures. Depending on the setup, it can also work with a welding rotator or positioner to make the welding process easier to manage.
