A Historic Museum Piece!
From the most famous family of Oud makers! The Nahhats!
This specific Ud Oud has the trade mark form a time of extreme workmanship unheard of, Unprecedented and shocking gorgeous. It was painstakingly crafted by Abdo George Nahhat from Damascus, Syria, as an immigrant to Brazil, Abdo and his sons continue building unique ouds, creating a dynasty of oud makers whose works are some of the most highly prized examples of the instrument you can find today.
This is one of the most prized and sought after, extremely rare instrument for professional musicians and collectors alike!
1934 Abdo George Nahhat & Fils, made in Brazil.
Born in Damascus, Syria on 1863 to George Yousef Nahat. Abdo George Nahat married Farida Zagzoug and had 6 children. He passed away on 1941 in São Paulo, Brazil.
If you visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, at 1000 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10028, you will find a 1925 Ūd made by him, in gallery 681.
This is a perfect exemple of a historical museum piece! 92 Years Old, a hidden treasure! Once in a lifetime chance, impossible to find another example like it!

This specific oud had a minor bow crack (old solid repair) and has a few small varnish nicks (blemishes). Maybe someone in the past applied a goma-laca varnish based, maybe to protect the instrument’s life, or may be very well original!
Has a few small blemishes, very easy to repair. Not a bid deal, but it can be restored to its original state, anytime someone’s wish!

The instrument features remarkable inlays of mother-of-pearl and wood, as well as three rosettes—the delicate designs covering the instrument’s sound holes. Meticulously carved from bone, these rosettes are known as shams in Arabic, meaning “sun.” Surrounded by a line of different colors wood purfling, loaded with intricate wood working as a master craftsmanship!
This one has a unique and beautiful calligraphy poem around the sound hole! There is no other alike!

This oud is extremely light and has a particularly strong and deep sound, typical of Nahhat ouds. The oud bowl is made of noble Brazilian woods. The Nahhat family is considered by many as the pioneers of the oud, their ouds have become extremely rare and genuine collector's instruments.
The work was totally innovative, using noble woods from Brazil. Among the woods used; are peroba-tigre, pau-rosa, pau-brasil, pau-ferro, rosewood (jacaranda) from Bahia, caviúna and ivory, all valuable native, notable for their high value in the international market, some are almost extinct, and extraction is prohibited nowadays.
It appears that in the mid 1930s several members of the Nahat family immigrated from Syria to Brazil. There they continued building beautiful ouds in the old family tradition. They even used the old Abdo George 'Atelier de Menuiserie' label but they added their Brazilizan address. After Abdo, the most prominent among those Nahhats was Elias, the son of Abdo George.
Nahhat ouds are known throughout the East for their exceptional quality.
The Nahhat dynasty ouds are the living proof of the cultural fusion that has marked the history of immigration in Brazil. The roots of national Arab music are solid and deep. Like Nahhat lutes built to survive through the generations.
